SUMMARY:Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company at Opalka Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company will perform new work inspired by the Opalka Gallery’s exhibition “Séance: Photographs by Shannon Taggart.”\n\nFor the past twenty years American artist Shannon Taggart (born 1975) has documented Spiritualist practices and communities in the United States\, England and Europe. The resulting body of work\, Séance\, examines Spiritualism’s relationship with human celebrity\, its connections to art\, science\, and technology\, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography. This exhibition presents forty-seven haunting images from the series\, revealing the emotional\, psychological\, and physical dimensions of Spiritualism in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Performance at The Hyde Collection
DESCRIPTION:On August 6\, 2022\, the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company returns to The Hyde Collection to present a site-specific concert created in response to the exhibit Transformations: The Art of John Van Alstine. Also featured is guitarist Maria Zemantauski. Spanning two large galleries\, Van Alstine’s pieces offer a heightened experience for both the audience and the dancer of a simultaneous sense of weight and floating that occurs when natural stone and man-made objects are combined. This is the third collaboration between ESDC and Van Alstine. Each experience between choreographer and sculptor opens new expanses\, new queries and ultimately new vision.

SUMMARY:Performance at the Opalka Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company will present a site-specific performance within the Opalka Gallery during the Judith Braun My Pleasure Exhibition on Friday\, April 1\, 2022.   \nESDC will create a series of dances that explore\, enhance and elaborate on Ms. Braun’s art as well as on the unique design of the exhibit. Ms. Braun’s larger than life black and white paintings\, their placement on frames that can be moved within the gallery space\, the enormous backdrop of lettering and side paintings at the entrance to the exhibit establish an environment of boldness\, mood and intrigue. The layering of ESDC’s choreography throughout the gallery; the selection of early 20th century and current African American jazz and blues music; the striking costume design of Kim Vanyo all combine to ensure an evening of surprise\, humor\, drama and singular experience.

SUMMARY:Abram Lansing Elementary School Residency 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company’s  Around the World project works with the Abram Lansing Elementary School’s 3rd grade students to expand their study of Egypt\, Norway\, Japan\, Brazil by incorporating the art form of dance and creative movement workshops. Engaging in the creative process and dance\, students increase their knowledge of dance vocabulary\, enhance their personal understanding of the 4 countries studied\, and reinforce their ability to verbally and physically articulate this knowledge. Throughout the residency students become increasingly aware of and proficient in the dance elements of Space\, Time\, Force\, Body and Movement. Combining classroom instruction and movement workshops allows students to deepen their understanding of the topic studied in inventive and engaging ways. For example\, students become a fjord (Norway)\, bullet train (Japan)\, rain forest (Brazil) and mummy (Egypt).

Residencies\, workshops and/or performances bring the excitement of exploring the creative process to children and young adults in both urban and rural schools.  Our educational programs introduce and explore modern dance in a pure performing sense and utilize dance to teach curricula and enhance understanding in the connectedness of art and everyday life. By making these early connections with an art form\, we create a respect for and understanding of the arts and its performing artists. This carries over into adult years and is passed down to future generations. Specially designed educational programming includes: Science In Motion\, If Books Could Dance!\, Celtic Footprints\, Choreophysics\, Dance by Chance\, Undercover Playground and From the mind of a single long vine\, one hundred opening lives.     \nESDC’s outreach programming continues to expand as we bring our work to community centers\, day care centers\, public playgrounds\, libraries\, art galleries and centers for special populations. ESDC’s outreach partnerships include the Center for Disability Services for which ESDC teaches creative movement workshops at the Smith Center (adults population) and Langan School (ages pre-school – 21) as part of the “Creative MOVEment” program\, a one-of-a-kind collaborative community partnership with MOVE–Mobility Opportunities Via Experience. Our creative movement workshops for these populations are designed to introduce the joy of dance\, movement for self expression and creativity into their everyday lives.   \nESDC has received funding from NYS Council on the Arts for multi-year general operating support\, individual artist projects\, long term Arts-in-Education residencies and three long-term residencies at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center.
