The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company’s Around the World project works with the Abram Lansing Elementary School’s 3rd grade students to expand their study of Egypt, Norway, Japan, Brazil by incorporating the art form of dance and creative movement workshops. Engaging in the creative process and dance, students increase their knowledge of dance vocabulary, enhance their personal understanding of the 4 countries studied, and reinforce their ability to verbally and physically articulate this knowledge. Throughout the residency students become increasingly aware of and proficient in the dance elements of Space, Time, Force, Body and Movement. Combining classroom instruction and movement workshops allows students to deepen their understanding of the topic studied in inventive and engaging ways. For example, students become a fjord (Norway), bullet train (Japan), rain forest (Brazil) and mummy (Egypt).
